Kirk's original Enterprise is destroyed in STAR TREK III. He expects to be reassigned to a smaller ship, but instead he is given command of a new Constitution-class ship which is named the Enterprise-A in honor of its predecessor.

The A made its debut at the end of STAR TREK IV and was filmed using the model that had been used in the first three movies with the addition of an extra letter at the end of the registry.
